Apparently I missed a great soccer practice last night. It was just a bit too cool for me. Especially since it's about 10 degrees colder on the field than it is here most of the time. Plus I've been a tad bit depressed lately and just couldn't muster the interest. So instead I stayed home and cooked a meal. Oven barbecued chicken breasts, rice, and a veg. And I made a pot of fluffy tapioca for dessert. I thought it would go well with an "edge of your seat" episode of LOST. Unfortunately it was a repeat and not a very good one. Yes, you read right. A bad episode does come along occasionally.
I went to bed early and tried to read Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. Wasn't happening. It's a pretty interesting read if you can get the family tree somewhat straight but last night I just didn't have it in me. I'm on page 259, just shy of the halfway point. Book club meets in a week to discuss. If I don't get out of this funk I'll never finish in time.
I've been spending copious amounts of time in the garden. Hopefully the massive dip in temperature last night didn't do any harm to my little seedlings. I should have put the melons and peppers in the cold frame last night but didn't think about it until it was too late. Great weather for my peas and cabbage though. I jumped the gun quite a bit this year and started a ton of stuff. I had to. I couldn't resist the siren song of the soil. The constant nagging of the pile of horse poo. I had to get the garden underway. I needed life to spring up before my eyes. So far everything has cooperated except for an old pack of spinach seeds and some saved delicata seeds. Still waiting for the weather to stabilize somewhat before I throw in the cucumbers, etc. I'm building a bamboo trellis for them. That project will be documented at Square Peg Mama as soon as I load the camera software onto this computer.
Time to wrap this up. It's Wednesday which means I will be meeting my writing buddy and fellow blogger at Colony Coffee. She's doing Script Frenzy. I'm still working on my Nanowrimo novel. I don't think I'll ever finish it. It keeps changing on me!

Meanwhile, back in the swamp....

I'm still here. Still a bored, middleaged homemaker and mother to one. Life has done my head in over the past few months and I find it hard to articulate what's going on. I've been writing (sporadically) on a new blog: Square Peg Mama that has a link to the forums. I've been considering shutting down the forums. They've been up for a long time (dog years) and get very little action, none local. I had hoped the forums would be a source of how-tos and DIY projects but it never came to pass. I got lazy. The documentation part is boring. I had that trouble in science class, too. The experiments were great but the meticulous data presentation was a yawn.
Last weekend the husband and I replaced the anode rod in the electric water heater. It was gnarly but will (hopefully) extend the life of the water heater by a few years. I should have posted about it.
I make a wicked good banana bread that is so healthy. I should post my recipe.
I have a chair that needs to be reupholstered. I took a ton of pictures while disassembling it. I should post about the rest of the process.
I created an island bed and filled it with shrubs, groundcovers, and perennials. I should have taken before and after pictures and posted about it.
I want to start making some mosaics for the garden. My mom has a stone that has stained glass embedded in it to look like an iris. Gorgeous. She doesn't use it. She has it propped up on her porch. I'd want to use mine in the garden. I've got some ideas rolling around but haven't taken the plunge yet. Way too much other stuff to do. (great excuse, eh?) But when I do I'll definitely post How-Tos.
So, if you're reading this, please follow the link to Square Peg Mama, leave a comment or join the forums!
